We price every Brisbane job on site, because the house sets the cost, not the suburb. The main things that move it are how many metres of gutter you have, how many storeys and how easy the roof is to reach, which mesh suits your trees, and how complex the roof is. The quote is free and fixed in writing.

Metres come first, and they add up faster than people expect once the patio, deck and carport gutters are counted.

Access is next. A high-set home on a sloping block, or a townhouse with box gutters and a parapet, takes more setting up than a low-set house on flat ground. We work that out at the quote, so it doesn't turn up as a surprise on the day.

Then the mesh and the roof itself. The woven EmberGuard costs more than the expanded mesh, so we only recommend it where your block calls for it. Valleys, solar panels and rooflines that step down a slope all take longer to fit.

Whatever the total, it includes the gutter clean before the mesh goes on and all four written guarantees.

If a clean is all you need for now, we do gutter cleaning without the mesh too.

For most Brisbane homes, our expanded aluminium mesh with 3 mm holes. We step up to the woven EmberGuard, with finer 2 mm holes, on bushland-edge blocks in the western and northern suburbs. We also consider it under a big jacaranda, because its small flowers and leaflets are the trickiest drop to keep out.

Under heavy smooth-barked gums, long ribbons of bark can lie across the mesh instead of blowing off. There we look at the finer weave and a steeper shed angle.

Near the bay, the metal matters as much as the holes. Every part we fit is aluminium, from the mesh to the clips, trims and screws, so there's no steel to rust in the salt air.

Either way, the call gets made on site, looking at your roof and the trees over it.

Brisbane North follows the Gympie Road corridor through Chermside and Aspley, with Everton Park on the ridges above Kedron Brook and Albany Creek out on the South Pine River. It's post-war and 1960s housing under street trees that went in with the suburbs and now stand well over the roofs.

Brisbane South takes in Mount Gravatt, Sunnybank, Holland Park, Wishart, Mansfield and Coorparoo. The blocks are big and well planted, so a poinciana, a mango and a gum can all feed the one gutter, and split-level homes funnel the lot into their valleys.

Brisbane East runs from Carindale out along Old Cleveland and Wynnum Roads to the water at Wynnum and Manly. Up on the ridge the homes have big rooflines and long valleys. Down by the bay, it's the salt that wears a gutter out.

Brisbane West is The Gap, Kenmore, Chapel Hill and Indooroopilly, the city's heaviest canopy, on steep blocks around Mt Coot-tha and the D'Aguilar foothills. Bushland-edge streets there face ember risk in a dry season, and plenty of rear gutters sit two storeys above sloping ground.
