Getting Your Gutters Ready for Bushfire Season in Queensland

The short answer

Get the dry leaves out of your gutters before bushfire season starts. The Queensland Government (opens in a new tab) lists “Keep gutters clear of leaf litter” as a yearly job for homes in bushfire-prone areas. Around Brisbane, the season typically runs from August to December. On a bush block, ember guard stops the leaves piling up again between checks.

Why Clean Your Gutters Before Bushfire Season?

Because a gutter full of dry leaves is fuel sitting right along the edge of your roof. In a bushfire, embers travel well ahead of the fire front, and they need something dry to land in. A clear gutter gives them less to catch. That's why gutters are on the Queensland Government, Logan and Sunshine Coast council bushfire lists.

You don't need to back onto forest for this to matter. Brisbane City Council (opens in a new tab) puts it plainly: “You don’t have to live in the bush to be threatened by bushfires, just close enough to be affected by burning material, embers and smoke.”

Gum leaves, bark strips and twigs pile up fastest under big trees. If your gutters are full, book a gutter clean before the hot, windy days. We clear out the leaves, twigs and sludge, then check the water runs to the downpipes.

When Is Bushfire Season in Queensland?

Around Brisbane, it typically runs from August to December. That's Brisbane City Council's guide (opens in a new tab) for the region, and the council adds that it “can vary depending on the condition of local bushland, long-term climate conditions and other weather events.” For southern Queensland as a whole, a 2013 Bureau of Meteorology (opens in a new tab) overview put the danger time at spring to mid-summer.

Up the coast, Sunshine Coast Council (opens in a new tab) said much the same in a 2024 bushfire article. Spring, it said, “heralds the start of bushfire season.”

So the best time to get ready is before all that. Brisbane City Council says (opens in a new tab) “The best time to prepare your home or business for an emergency or natural disaster is outside of the storm and bushfire seasons.” Our guide on how often to clean gutters works out the quiet window from the council's dates.

Already into the season? Don't wait for next year. A gutter cleared now holds less for an ember to catch than one left full until summer.

Your Bushfire Season Gutter Checklist

  1. 01Clear the leaf litter out of the guttersIt's on the Queensland Government's list for bushfire-prone homes: “Keep gutters clear of leaf litter.” Get the leaves, twigs and bark out, right down to the bottom of the gutter. Under big trees, look again partway through the season.
  2. 02Clear the roof as wellLogan City Council's list says to “clear your roof and gutters of leaves, twigs, bark and other debris.” Check the valleys too. Valleys are where two roof slopes meet, and they catch leaves as well.
  3. 03Buy and test gutter plugsStraight from the government's list for before the season. Gutter plugs block the downpipes so the gutters can hold water. There's more on that in the questions at the end.
  4. 04Trim low branchesThe same list says “Trim low-lying branches (those under 2m in height).” Fewer branches over the roof means fewer leaves dropping into the gutters.
  5. 05Rake up leaves near the houseLogan's list includes “rake up leaves, twigs and branches” and clearing leaf litter near your house. The ground under the eaves counts too.
  6. 06Fix damaged roofing and seal gapsFrom the government's list: “Replace any damaged roofing and seal any gaps.” Logan adds gaps around windows, door frames and roof eaves. That's roof work, so leave it to someone with the right gear.
  7. 07Check your pumps and waterThe list says to “Check that pumps, generators and water systems are working.” Do it now, while there's no smoke on the horizon.
  8. 08Make a bushfire survival planBrisbane City Council sends people to the Queensland Fire Department's website to make one. Write down what you'll do, when you'd leave and where you'd go.

Does Gutter Guard Help in Bushfire Season?

It helps keep the gutter itself from filling with dry leaves, which is the part of the job that keeps coming back. In a 2024 bushfire article, Sunshine Coast Council (opens in a new tab) wrote: “Clear gutters and roof of debris. Installing gutter guards is recommended.” Guard won't stop leaves landing on the roof, though, so a bush block still needs a look.

The material matters. AS 3959 is the Australian Standard for building in bushfire-prone areas, and Queensland has adopted it (opens in a new tab). For gutter and valley guards, it asks one thing: if they're fitted, they must be non-combustible. That holds at every Bushfire Attack Level (BAL). Aluminium is non-combustible. Plastic is the wrong material to have on a roofline near bushland at all.

The Queensland Government makes a similar point for new homes in the most extreme fire risk areas (opens in a new tab). Its list for those homes includes “Metal rather than plastic external trimmings such as vents, guttering and down pipes.”

Our Premium Woven Aluminium EmberGuard is a tight 2 mm woven aluminium mesh, 1mm thick. We fit it over gutters and valleys, and every install starts with a free gutter clean. It comes with a written 10-year no blocked gutter guarantee. Vents and eave gaps fall under a separate part of the standard, so ask us about those at the quote. We'll tell you straight what our mesh covers and what it doesn't.

What Should You Do About the Gutters When a Fire Is Near?

Follow the official warnings and your bushfire survival plan. If your plan is to leave, Logan City Council (opens in a new tab) says to “go early, before a bushfire threatens your area.” Call 000 (Triple Zero) to report a fire or smoke. Cleaning the gutters is a job for the weeks before a fire, not while one is close. The government's list (opens in a new tab) for when a fire front is approaching does include plugging the downpipes and filling the gutters with water.

After the fire has passed, the Queensland Government says (opens in a new tab) to check for spot fires or embers once it's safe to go outside. Its list of places to look includes roof lines and gutters.

On tank water? Logan City Council says to disconnect your tank and seal any openings when smoke is in the air. Then: “When all is clear, thoroughly clean your roof and gutters then reconnect your tank.” Our guide to gutter guard and rainwater tanks covers keeping roof water clean the rest of the year.

Even on a calm day, gutter cleaning is ladder work. Here's why ladder work is riskier than it looks. We're fully insured for roof work, and the quote is free.

Living Near the Bush in The Gap, Kenmore or Albany Creek?

Then your gutters fill faster than most, and fire season matters more. Brisbane City Council says people living in bushland or rural residential areas are at higher risk of bushfires (opens in a new tab). In The Gap, homes run right up to the D'Aguilar Range foothills, and gutters can refill within weeks of a clean.

In Albany Creek, a large share of homes back directly onto bushland, with constant eucalypt leaf and bark coming off it. Kenmore's older gardens have eucalypts standing over roofs too. We've written up what bush blocks in The Gap are up against, the tree mix over Kenmore roofs, and the bush edge in Albany Creek.

Brisbane City Council puts storm season at October to March (opens in a new tab), so from October to December, storm season and fire season overlap. The same clear gutter does two jobs. Our storm season checklist covers the storm side.

We clean gutters and fit ember guard across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. We've been family-owned for over 25 years, we're fully insured, and quotes are free.
