Is Gutter Cleaning Dangerous? When to Get Off the Ladder

Mostly older men doing jobs around the house. A study at two hospitals (opens in a new tab), one in Brisbane and one in Nambour, looked at 177 people hurt in ladder falls. The typical patient was a man over 50 on a home ladder. Across Australia, 41,092 ladder falls ended in a hospital stay between July 2002 and June 2012.

That national count comes from a study of hospital records (opens in a new tab). Over those ten years, ladder falls went from 3,374 hospital stays a year to 4,945. The rate rose for men, and it rose more for people over 60.

Queensland's own numbers point the same way. The Queensland Government says over 1,000 Queenslanders end up in hospital each year after falling off a ladder. Most of those injuries happen around the home. It also says most men hurt or killed in ladder falls are at or near retirement age, doing maintenance around their home.

Cleaning the gutters is exactly that kind of job.

Bad enough to change how people live. In a follow-up study (opens in a new tab), the same team phoned those patients six months after their fall. Of the 134 they reached, 65 (49%) said their overall quality of life had clearly got worse. Older men using ladders at home are at high risk of serious long-term injury, the team said.

The biggest changes showed up in sleep, in pain, and in anxiety, worry and depression. Each one was reported by more than a quarter of the group.

That's a high price for a clean gutter.

It can be, if the ladder suits the job and it's set up properly. But falls from home ladders are common. The hospital researchers who studied them aimed their advice at men 50 and over doing jobs at home. First on their list is avoiding the task. Its first step is to think about other ways to get the job done. If you're older or live with a disability, you may qualify for help with home maintenance. To check, it says to contact your local council, My Aged Care or your disability support service.

Stop when any of these is true. You're not steady on a ladder. The gutter's on a second storey. It's wet or windy. You'd have to lean out, or climb onto the roof, to reach it. Or there's nobody home to hold the ladder. Any one of those is enough reason to call someone.

Most of that list comes from the same government page. It says never to use a ladder in rain, wind or a thunderstorm. It says to have someone hold the ladder at the base. And it says to work within arm's reach, and to climb down and move the ladder instead of leaning over.

It also says to know your limits. Be careful about climbing if you're alone and can't get help. The same goes if you have a disability or medical condition, or you're taking medication. And check there are no power lines or exposed wires near the ladder.

Two storeys is a different job. The ladder's longer and the fall's further. And since you should only work within arm's reach, you're climbing down and moving the ladder again and again to get around the house. We clean gutters on two-storey homes. Hills make it harder. On a sloping block, the downhill gutter can sit as high as a second storey, even on a single-storey house. Plenty of homes on Brisbane's leafy west side are two storeys on the downhill side. And on a steep Buderim block, a two-storey home can put the low-side gutter four or five metres off the ground.

You might. The Queensland Government's Home Assist Secure program (opens in a new tab) can help pay for jobs like cleaning gutters. It's for people 60 or older, or any age with a disability, who hold a Pensioner Concession Card and can't do the work themselves. It pays up to $200 a job and $500 a year toward labour.

You count as unable to do it if you don't have the skills, or if the job isn't safe for you. The money only covers labour, and only on jobs that cost $1,500 or less all up. If the labour costs more, you pay the difference.

There's one catch. If you qualify for another government program, you usually can't get this one too. Two examples are the Commonwealth Home Support Program and Support at Home.
