How Long Do Gutter Guards Last on a Queensland Roof?

The short answer

There's no set number of years. It comes down to what the guard is made of, how well it's fitted, and how much sun and salt air it cops. Steel can corrode near the sea. Our aluminium mesh doesn't rust. A guarantee term is how long the business will fix what it covers.

How Many Years Do Gutter Guards Last?

Nobody can give you an honest number for your roof. Even the ACCC (opens in a new tab), Australia's consumer watchdog, says “There are no set rules for deciding whether a product is of acceptable quality, or how long a product should last for.” What you can do is look at the things that wear a guard down, and pick one that suits your spot.

We look at four things. What the guard's made of. How well it was fitted. Where your house sits, from full sun to a sea breeze. And how it's looked after.

Owner reports give a rough feel, nothing more. On a CHOICE Community thread (opens in a new tab), one owner said their fine metal mesh had been on for at least a decade, and “has been great.” Another had a plastic guard on two homes “for over 18 years with no problems.” Those are single homes, so don't read them as a rule.

Does Salt Air Shorten Gutter Guard Life?

It can, and the closer you are to the surf, the harder it gets. Salt holds water on metal, and wet metal is where corrosion starts. For its roofing steel, BlueScope (opens in a new tab) classes areas “typically 100 to 200 metres from breaking surf” as severe marine. Anything “typically within 100 metres from breaking surf” is very severe.

ASSDA (opens in a new tab), the stainless steel industry body, explains why. “Sea salt has the characteristic of staying wet until a very low relative humidity”. So a salty surface stays damp longer than a clean one.

Distance isn't the whole story. BlueScope says performance also depends on “prevailing winds, and presence of unwashed areas.” ASSDA says tea staining on stainless steel is most common within about five kilometres of the surf. In windy spots, it can turn up 20 kilometres or more inland. It's “much less severe around sheltered bays.” And ASSDA adds that the same factors speed up corrosion in other materials too.

So a home facing open surf cops more than one facing a sheltered bay. Sheltered isn't salt-free, though. ASSDA says tea staining is most likely up to “one kilometre from still marine waters.” In the Redlands, sea breezes carry salt onto the roof, so bayside homes still need the right metal.

That's why every part we fit is aluminium, from the mesh to the clips, trims and screws, so there's no steel to rust in the salt air. Our proprietary coating carries its own 10-year guarantee against fading. Read how we work near the beach on the Gold Coast, and on the Sunshine Coast.

How Can You Make Gutter Guard Last Longer?

Keep leaves and salt from sitting on it, and check it from the ground. Wet leaf mulch holds salt against metal, and that speeds up rust. BlueScope's care advice for its painted steel (opens in a new tab) says to hose spots rain doesn't wash “at least every six months and more frequently in coastal areas where marine salt spray is prevalent.”

It names “the underside of eave gutters” as one of those spots. BlueScope wrote that for its painted steel, not for gutter guard, so take it as a guide. Our own view is simple: don't let wet leaves sit in the gutter, because they hold salt against the metal.

After a big storm, have a look from the yard. Is the guard sitting flat? Are leaves piling up in the valleys? Is any edge lifting? If something looks off, call your installer.

Leave the climbing to someone with the right gear. The Queensland Government (opens in a new tab) says “Over 1,000 Queenslanders are hospitalised each year after falling off ladders and most of these injuries happen around the home.” Hosing from the ground is fine. Here's why ladder work is riskier than it looks, especially on a second storey.

Is a 25-Year Guarantee the Same as a 25-Year Lifespan?

No. A guarantee term is how long the business promises to fix what it covers. It isn't a promise the guard will last that long, or stop at that age. The ACCC says warranties (opens in a new tab) “are extra promises that a business makes about the quality of a product or how it will fix any problems with a product or service.”

Your rights don't end with the warranty, either. The ACCC says “After the warranty expires, the consumer guarantee of acceptable quality usually still applies.” It also notes that a warranty's terms “may require the consumer to do certain things in order to keep the warranty.” So read the terms before you sign, whoever you buy from.

Here's what comes with every install from us, all four in writing. A 25-year full system guarantee on the mesh, clips, trims, screws, every component. A 20-year workmanship guarantee on the installation itself, from the day we fit it. A 10-year no blocked gutter guarantee. And a 10-year coating guarantee against fading.

None of those numbers is an age limit for your gutters. Our guarantees page has the full terms, and we'll go through them with you at the free on-site quote.

What Should You Ask an Installer About Lifespan?

Ask what it's made of, all the way down to the screws. Ask how it's fixed to your roof. Ask what the guarantee covers, for how long, and whether it's in writing. Near the coast, ask about the fixings twice, because two different metals touching can corrode where they meet.

BlueScope's bulletin on mixed metals (opens in a new tab) says that kind of corrosion only happens while the join is wet. Salt on the surface makes it worse. That's a bigger deal by the sea.

How long should a mesh gutter guard last?

There's no fixed lifespan anyone can honestly give for your roof. The ACCC (opens in a new tab) says there are no set rules for how long a product should last. What you can do is look at what wears a guard down. We look at four things: what it's made of, how well it was fitted, where your house sits (full sun or a sea breeze), and how it's looked after.

Is galvanised gutter guard a good pick near the sea?

Salt is the thing to plan for. One CHOICE Community member (opens in a new tab) says that near the sea, galvanised guard's life “may be much less than normal”, and that the cheaper plastic “may actually last longer”. That's one person's view. We fit aluminium, from the mesh to the clips, trims and screws, so there's no steel to rust in the salt air.

Does gutter guard stop every bit of build-up?

Owners of other guards say not always. One CHOICE Community owner with fine metal mesh says “you do still get some accumulation”. Another says that on a low-pitched roof, there's no such thing as self cleaning. Ours comes with a 10-year no blocked gutter guarantee, and our guarantees page sets out its terms. No guard yet? Book a gutter clean.

Is it worth cleaning gutters?

Yes. Gutters only do their job when water can get through them. The Queensland Government's storm advice (opens in a new tab) is to “Clean gutters and downpipes so water can drain away as quickly as possible.” Wet leaves left sitting also hold salt against the metal, and that speeds up rust.
